Porsche
Unity Path Tracer case study

Unity / Porsche

These are my first steps at high quality automotive rendering in Unity 3D. I used a 3rd Party Model of the Porsche 911 GT-3 and other renderings to dip my toes in.

This rendering is a faithful recreation of the work of fellow allumni Bernd Montag. Below is a comparison between his rendering (left, screenshot taken from his Instagram) and mine (right).

To achieve roughly the same look, a lot of digital trickery was involved. Nevertheless, everything was realized in-engine, without any additional rendering or post.

The next challenge

… was to recreate car renderings found on the official Porsche website to see if I could get anywhere near the „real deal“. This was the first time I used the Unity 3D Path Tracer and the results are surprisingly close to the original.

Disclaimer

The Porsche model is a 3rd party asset. HDRIs are from Poly Haven. Everything else was done by me, i.e. the environment, lighting, cameras, particles, shading, post-processing. A few additional Shaders and Textures were custom made in Unity and Substance Painter respectively.

Programs

Unity 3D, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, Photoshop
